Lammas or Lughnasadh?

Lammas or Loaf Mass Day, Thanksgiving for Grain Harvest
“The feast of St. Peter in Chains, formerly on August 1st, has now been removed from the General Roman Calendar. This feast day was also called ‘Lammas Day’ or ‘Loaf Mass Day’ because this day was offered as thanksgiving for the wheat harvest, used for the bread that becomes the Eucharist. Florence Berger discusses close link of the liturgical year and agrarian life. She also discusses the Christianization of some pagan customs, using the example of Scotch Highland Quarter Cakes.”

Tailtiu: Harvest Goddess
“Tailtiu is an Irish Goddess of Sovereignty, an ancient Goddess whose annual funeral games, according to the myth, were instituted by her foster son Lugh. These games were held for more than a thousand years at a hill in Co. Meath that even today bears her name, Tailtiu or, in English, Telltown The name of the festival is Lughnasadh, one of the great fire festivals of ancient and modern Celtic peoples. …”

Some interesting blogs

Philip Carr-Gomm’s Weblog (since October 2007)
“The main focus of the blog is spirituality in its widest sense, and I believe one of the most important tasks for us today is to infuse our spiritual questing with humour and joy. Without humour we lose our humility, without joy a spiritual path becomes dry with the dead hand of piousness. For me, a spirituality needs the glorious world of Nature and the joy of laughter in plentiful supply. If these qualities appeal to you, I hope some of this blog will be interesting and entertaining for you!”

Under the Ancient Oaks. Musings of a Pagan, Druid and Unitarian Universalist (since June 2008)
John Beckett wrote a series on the centers of the Pagan movement and his commitments to them. The original post had three centers: Nature, the Gods and the Self. After some discussion, the third blog is about Community in stead. Other articles include: Creating meaningful rituals; Dark green religion; The price of magic; A commitment to nature.

Raise the Horns (since September 2011)
Jason Mankey writes about music (‘The Tarot and Led Zeppelin’); defining Paganism; the occult in America; and thought provoking articles like ‘Shouldn’t Rituals Be Entertaining?’

Sermons from the Mound (since November 2012)
Christine Hoff Kraemer and Yvonne Aburrow are both religious scholars, and present articles and reviews on (Pagan) religious studies. Subjects so far have been ‘seeking the mystery’; aspects of initiation; gender and sexuality; Pagan intrafaith, et cetera.

Greening the Spirit (since March 2013)
Writings on Pagan spirituality by Vivianne Crowley. One article each month. Thus far subjects were: Welcoming Spring; Honoring Venus; the alchemical marriage; the chariot and the sun; and Isis.

Over Jana
